2007-02-20 Prime minister heart attack emails Print

Virtual Access has been advised by AusCERT (Australian Computer Emergency Response Team) of malicious emails currently circulating.  Today's email purports to be a news report regarding the Australian Prime Minister, Mr John Howard, surviving a heart attack.  The news report  is false.  The email message include a link to when is apparently a news web site, but in fact is a site which attempts to infect visitors with a trojan program.

AusCERT reports that while they are still investigating the nature of the threat posed by this email and it's associated web sites, similar incidents have been used in the past to steal passwords, modify security settings on PCs and the like.  They (and we) recommend that you avoid clicking on any links in email, unless the email was already expected. Unsolicited e-mail should always be treated with suspicion.
